Questions & answers

Everything you want to know.

Privacy, languages, recordings, export — answered honestly.

Is this just another voice recorder?
No — a recorder saves your voice and forgets it. Storykept listens. It follows the story as you tell it, asks the next question a good interviewer would, and recognises what kind of story it is so it knows what is still missing. Tell it out of order, jump back in time, correct a name, add a detail next week — it still produces one clear, consistent story that reads like a professional ghostwriter wrote it. And it is not just you: invite the family, let everyone add their side, and the perspectives weave into one living narrative.
Does my parent need to be tech-savvy, or have an account?
No account needed to record. The storyteller — your mum, dad, grandparent — simply taps a link you send them and starts talking. That is it. No app to download, no sign-up, no passwords. The family organiser keeps the account; relatives can contribute through a record link or join a browser story call.
My parents do not like phones — what if they will not use a link at all?
Then record the conversation yourself. Visit them, make a coffee, think of a few things you have always wanted to ask, and just hit record. You talk, you laugh, you remember together — and instead of that afternoon vanishing into yet another voice memo you never open again, Storykept transcribes it, shapes it into a faithful story, tags the people and places, and keeps the original voice beside it.
What languages does it support?
Storykept works in your family's language, not just English — across 34 languages. It listens, asks its follow-up questions, and writes each story in the language it is actually told in, so grandma can record in the language she thinks in.
What happens to the recordings — who can see them?
Your family's stories are private by default. Only the people you explicitly invite can access them. We will never share your recordings with third parties, and they will never be used to train outside systems. You decide who sees what, and you can change that at any time.
Is my data safe, and where is it stored?
Your data is stored on EU servers, and Storykept is built GDPR-aware from the ground up — not bolted on as an afterthought. You have the right to delete your data, the right to export it, and we require explicit consent before any processing. We do not sell data, ever.
Can I export everything?
Yes — your family's data export is always available. Original voice recordings, transcripts, story text, photos, and family tree data can be exported in open formats. Core also includes the formatted, print-ready PDF book export; saved book PDFs are included in the full export after you download them once.
Can the whole family add stories?
Yes. Multiple people can contribute to the same family archive — different voices, different perspectives, all woven together. There is no per-person fee. Everyone shares one yearly Story Hours pool of 24 hours, and anyone can add a story through a share link without making an account.
Can Storykept build a family tree?
Yes. Storykept keeps track of people and relationships as stories accumulate, so your archive is not just a pile of recordings. You can review and edit the family tree, use it to understand who a story is about, and export it as readable files plus structured JSON and GEDCOM.
Can it keep track of places and locations?
Yes. Storykept recognises places in stories, lets you attach a precise location when needed, and keeps place tags together across the family archive. That makes it easier to find every story connected to Sofia, the old house, a hospital, a village, or anywhere else your family history lives.
Can I record a live conversation?
Yes. You can record alone, send an async record link, or start a browser story call so someone can join from their phone or laptop. There is no phone number or landline setup — it is a private link, and Storykept keeps the recording as source material for the finished story.
What does it cost?
Start with a free month — every Core feature unlocked and about 1 Story Hour, no charge for 30 days. After that, Storykept Core is €59 a year for your whole family, billed annually: unlimited members, 24 Story Hours a year, and PDF book export included. No monthly option, no per-person fees. Printed hardcovers are optional extras, coming soon from €99. See the full pricing page for details.
What counts against Story Hours?
New recordings count by their actual length. Fresh AI work — for example creating a new narrated version, restyling a story, or rendering book pages — may use a small amount of the same Story Hours pool. Reading, manual text edits, sharing, data exports, original playback, and returning to saved or cached versions do not.
Does it produce a printed book?
Yes — when you are ready for something to hold. Storykept is first a living archive: stories accumulate over time, new voices can be added whenever someone is ready, and people and places stay connected. Print ordering opens soon: you will be able to turn part of the archive into a full-colour hardcover — up to 300 pages, Classic from €99 or Premium from €139 — each a one-time purchase that includes a full year of Storykept Core. If you already have Core, you only pay for the book itself.
